4. Facts and Opinions

  Facts can be verified by empirical or analytical means as accurate or inaccurate by counting, measuring, weighing, touching, hearing, observing, or analyzing—for example, ‘‘The car weighs 3,500 pounds’’ or 

‘‘The car is metallic silver in color.’’

  Opinions are statements that express an attitude or a value and cannot be proved. 

The terms fact and opinion are imperfect descriptions. The word fact suggests something that can be proved with objective evidence and suggests something that is true.

 

 

5. Comparing and Contrasting

  Comparing and contrasting are powerful abilities. Marzano, Gaddy, and Dean (2000) found that teaching comparing and classifying boosted students’ performance on achievement tests by 45 percentile points. This represents a gain of about one and a half years. Nearly a century ago, Terman (1916), who developed the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Test, declared that comparing and contrasting were the most important cognitive abilities.
